Created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Picard is an American science fiction drama television series. It is the eighth Star Trek series and was launched in 2020 as part of Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe.
The series first premiered on January 23, 2020, on CBS All Access followed by the second season on March 3, 2022, on Paramount+. The series was renewed for a third season which is scheduled to release soon.
So, when is the third season releasing? What is the plot? Who will come back to play their roles? Continue reading to know further details.
Star Trek: Picard Plot and Cast
The second and third seasons tell separate stories, despite being developed together, with Matalas saying the third season was “incredibly different” from the first two. He hoped it would be an appropriate, satisfying conclusion for Picard’s story, explaining that executive producer Akiva Goldsman had “constructed a fascinating and heartbreaking psychological exploration of Picard” for the season.
He said it would be less intimate than the second season, with some “game-changing Star Trek Universe ideas”, and added that some elements from Star Trek: The Original Series and the films starring the Original Series cast would be used in the season to “tie some Star Trek together”.
These include references to the “more nautical, cat and mouse submarine-movie” ideas that were used for those early Star Trek films. In April 2022, when it was revealed that other members of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast would be starring with Stewart in the season, Matalas recalled watching that series as a child and said it was “most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the USS Enterprise.
Following the events of Season 2, we expect the following cast members will return for Season 3 – Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, Michelle Hurd as Rafaella “Raffi” Musiker, and Evan Evagora as Elnor, and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine.
One notable exception to this will be Alison Pill after she recently confirmed that Agnes Jurati won’t be returning in the final season. There’s also a question mark around Santiago Cabrera’s involvement now that Cristobal “Chris” Rios has decided to stay in the past and live out his life there instead.
Thankfully, some very special cast members have been lined up to take their place. Before Season 2 even finished airing, Picard had already announced that a huge number of classic characters from Next Generation play a key role in season three.
Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Release Date
As previously mentioned, Season 3 was filmed immediately after Season 2, which wasn’t exactly easy for anyone involved, least of all Patrick Stewart. With this in mind, we predict the series should be arriving on our screens in early 2023, factoring in time for post-production and previous release schedules.
By February 2022, the producers had decided to end the series with the third season. The new season will also consist of ten episodes like the first two seasons.
