The making of a satirical-comedy is not a piece of cake or a cup of tea. The creator needs to keep in mind every subtle detail and every precise dialogue and monologue which will squeeze out the humor demanded by the show. And undoubtedly, such fine craft is woven by Jesse Armstrong, the creator of the American satirical-comedy series Succession, which is now on the threshold of the third season (there had been words about the release being this month, but there is no official date yet). It premiered on June 3, 2018, on HBO and already received much attention and respect with just 20 episodes. In 2020, the series received eighteen nominations at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Drama Series.
The official description of the storyline goes like this, “Succession follows the Roy family, owners of media conglomerate Waystar Royco. The family patriarch, Logan Roy has experienced a decline in health. His four children – removed oldest son Connor, power-hungry Kendall, irreverent Roman, and politically savvy Siobhan – all with varying degrees of connection to the company, begin to prepare for a future without their father, and each begins vying for prominence within the company.” The show contemplates the social issues of human life, like that of power, politics, money, and family. Succession is executive produced by Jesse Armstrong, Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Will Ferrell, Jane Tranter, and Mark Mylod. Jesse Armstrong serves as showrunner.
If you are just starting with the show, or already started with the first season, you should know that they do have a podcast channel which “features conversations with the major players from the award-winning HBO series.” The show is hosted by Roger Bennett and produced by Bennett and Jonathan Williamson. The podcast is raw and naked and as a fan, you would be satisfied with the gift they are giving you, the back-stage chit-chats and “the razor-sharp writing, dynamic performances, and high-powered family drama that drive the series.”
Succession stars a list of brilliant artists: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck, Hiam Abbass, and the index goes on.
