Directed by Karam Gill, and produced by Imagine Documentaries, Rolling Stone, and Lightbox, this unauthorized three-part documentary series profiles hip-hop artist Tekashi 6ix9ine’s (born Daniel Hernandez) epic rise to notoriety and premiered on Sunday 21, February 2021, at 10 P.M on Showtime.

Narrated by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, the journey begins with a first-gen Mexican and Puerto Rican kid from Bushwick, Brooklyn named Daniel Hernandez. Deep childhood trauma, a broken education system, and a gentrifying neighborhood set the stage for his bizarre transformation into hip hop’s greatest villain, propelling him to global fame, and terrifying downfall. Emotionally charged interviews and never before heard audio unveil a story that could only be told in the digital era.

Karam Gill to Deadline: Imagine, Rolling Stone and Lightbox partnered up on it and reached out to me. Initially, I didn’t want to do the project… he’s not a person at first that I wanted to do a project on, but as I started to think about it, I felt it was a really important story to tell because it taps into a lot of really dark things that are going on in our digital culture and our world right now. I came on board and put my spin on it – the last thing I wanted to do was make a straightforward saga or story about him – that’s not what this is supposed to be. It needs to make people think about who we’re becoming, the people who are rising to prominence, and what that means about us.
