The Great is an American comedy-drama television series.  It is based on the rise of Catherine the Great, Empress of All Russia. All the 10 episodes of the first season were released on Hulu on May 15, 2020.

“I put this show on not knowing anything about it and was surprised by how much I ended up loving it!

The main complaints I’m seeing in negative reviews are vulgarity and historical inaccuracy. If profanity, sex, and a bit of gore offend you, this definitely isn’t the show for you. As for the historical accuracy, the title sequence of every episode literally says “an occasionally true story.” So, it makes no claims to be true to history. It’s a raunchy historical satire and to me, it’s hilarious!

Nicholas Hoult carries the comedy and Elle Fanning makes a perfect protagonist to root for but without high stakes. Her character is totally likeable but just self-righteous enough that you won’t be too frustrated by her failures.

The production quality is high and the cast is good all around. It’s a good mix of ridiculous comedy and dark humour with a sprinkling of genuine, serious moments, and even the most outrageous characters are fleshed out enough not to feel tropey or static.
