5 Best Lawyer Movies of All Time
It’s been proven by science that even law students require some time to relax and recharge. We suggest you dim the lights, pop some corn in the microwave, put your thoughts in neutral, and relax with a movie if you need a break. Listed below are 10 films that explore legal themes that may interest current and future legal scholars:
- The Woman in Black (2012)
Even though the 19th century came to a close with the invention of the automobile. With the railroad and the telegraph, the man was still helpless in the face of supernatural occurrences. Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer from London, has to leave his 4-year-old kid behind. He travels to the remote northern village of Il Marsh. He went to compile a register of documents left behind by the estate’s late owner. After arriving and he had conversations with the unfriendly residents. There he realizes that mysterious darkness casts its shadow over the settlement. A succession of terrifying deaths among the homes of the villagers begins when he catches sight of a woman in black near the old cemetery.
- The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
Matthew McConaughey plays defense attorney Mick Haller in the Brad Furman film The Lincoln Lawyer. Haller’s office is a converted Lincoln Continental. While most of Mick’s clients are lowlifes, he unexpectedly finds himself defending Louis Ross Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), a wealthy Beverly Hills playboy who has been charged with attempted murder. Mick first thinks the case is going to be a piece of cake and that the outcome is a foregone conclusion. However, he quickly finds out that there’s more to it than meets the eye and that it’s related to a case he worked on before.
- Rules of Engagement (2000)
A risky special assignment awaits Marine Corps Colonel Terry Childers in one of the Middle Eastern governments, where a protest by enraged Islamists is taking place outside the fortified walls of the American embassy. The US Ambassador and his family are in danger as a mob of angry people storms the building, so he fires on them in accordance with the rules of engagement. Now he’s been accused of murdering citizens of a different country. The administration has decided to silence the looming international crisis by convening a public trial in which the revered veteran colonel will be accused of unpardonable offenses. However, his close friend and fellow soldier from the Vietnam War, military lawyer Hayes Hodges, defend him in a trial. Thanks to his own inquiry, we now know the horrifying truth about what happened on embassy grounds and afterward.
- Presumed Innocent (1990)
Presumed Innocent, directed by Alan J. Pakula, follows Harrison Ford’s Rusty Sabich, a chief deputy, as he is tasked by prosecuting attorney Raymond Horgan (Brian Dennehy) to look into the rape and murder of his colleague Carolyn Polhemus (played by Greta Scacchi).
Horgan doesn’t realize Polhemus and Sabich are having an affair when they are given the task. However, Horgan’s adversaries eventually demand his arrest as information implicating Sabich becomes public. Sabich must retain the services of defense attorney Sandy Stern (Raul Julia).
- 12 Angry Men (1957)
This Sidney Lumet classic follows a jury of 12 men as they deliberate on whether to find a poor young man guilty of murder. He faces the death penalty if he is proven guilty. At the start of the movie, everyone on the jury, with the exception of Juror 8, believes the young guy to be guilty. Henry Fonda’s character, Juror No. 8, suggests that the jury meet and deliberate before deciding whether or not to execute the defendant. Many jurors waver in their votes as they are confronted with evidence they had previously ignored.
The films on this list aren’t exhaustive. However, it is challenging to list all of the best Canadian films about attorneys within the scope of a single article. After all, directors can still find success in this subject. And while we know this isn’t an exhaustive list, we did our best to include some of the most memorable movies about lawyers that have been seen by millions and enjoyed by all.
