The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5: Release Date, Plot and more!

Created by Bruce Miller, The Handmaid’s Tale is an American dystopian television series. It is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Miller also served as the executive producer alongside Warren Littlefield, Reed Morano, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Ilene Chaiken, Elisabeth Moss, Mike Barker, Eric Tuchman, Yahlin Chang, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa and Dorothy Fortenberry.

The first three episodes of the series premiered on April 26, 2017, and the subsequent seven episodes were released every Wednesday. In July 2019, the series was renewed for a fourth season, which premiered on April 27, 2021. Ahead of the fourth season premiere, the series was renewed for a fifth season.

The Handmaid’s Tale Plot and Cast

We can be sure to expect a lot of drama considering the way The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 ended. Speaking about the fifth season, Miller told a news outlet:

“I have to say I would have had very different ideas before the pandemic. I mean, we talked about it, and Lizzie and I have talked about it, and the writing staff and I have talked about it extensively about where we’re going precisely, but I do feel like, after this year, it’s a good time to reassess.”

“So I know where I am in the story, and I do feel like we’re kind of reaching kind of a pivot point, but whether that’s the end or not, I don’t know. It just feels like it’s a good time to reassess what you were thinking, just because the story world has opened up because the real world has changed so much.”

Given the fact several of the original cast members star in a video announcing the confirmation of a fifth season, we expect to see more of Moss, Bledel and Wiley but there might be a few new faces added to the mix.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Release Date

The series will return with two new episodes on September 14, 2022 on Hulu, followed by new episodes every Wednesday. Further details are expected to be revealed soon.

The series was renewed for a fifth season back on December 10, 2020. At the time, Moss was joined by several of her Handmaid’s Tale cast members to announce that Season 4 filming had resumed and Season 5 was on the way.
