Created by Abel Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson, The Idol is an upcoming drama series, produced for HBO. Tesfaye, Fahim and Levinson are also the executive producers alongside Joseph Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Aaron L. Gilbert and Nick Hall.

The show is being produced by A24, Bron Creative and Little Lamb. HBO gave the production a series order for Season 1 on November 22, 2021. It was revealed that Amy Seimetz would direct all the episodes and it was reported on January 14, 2022 that Nick Hall joined the production as an executive producer.

The Idol Plot and Cast

The Idol is set against the backdrop of the music industry and would focus on a self-help guru and leader of a modern day cult who enters a complicated relationship with a rising pop idol. Since further details of the plot are yet to be revealed, fans can look towards the singer and his collaborators’ past work for clues.

There is also a possibility that the show will draw mysteries and neo-noir thrillers to create a series that taps into The Weeknd’s signature flair for character acting and intoxicating, surrealist aesthetic. For now, the makers are yet to disclose further details related to the series.

Coming to the cast, the actors who have been cast in the lead roles include Abel Tesfaye, Lily-Rose Depp, Suzanna Son, Steve Zissis, Troye Sivan and Juliebeth Gonzalez. The rest of the cast members include Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley, Nico Hiraga, Anne Heche, Maya Eshet, Tyson Ritter, Kate Lyn Sheil, Liz Caribel Sierra and Finely Rose Slater.

The Idol Release Date

An official release date for The Idol has not been unveiled by the makers. Principal photography for the series began in November 2021 in Los Angeles, California and considering that, the show should release by the end of 2022.

The makers have confirmed that the show would consist of six episodes. It is not confirmed if the series has been renewed for a second season and the decision is entirely dependent on how successful the first season would be.
