The Megwas a surprise hit when it came out in 2018. The film is loosely based on the book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by author Steve Alten. The film was directed by Jon Turtletaub, based on a screenplay by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. It had a worldwide box-office collection of $530 million and received good audience reviews as well. A sequel was announced by executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying in October 2018.
Cast of The Meg 2
Jason Statham will be reprising his role as Jonas Taylor in The Meg 2. He had talked about a potential sequel in April 2018 before the release of the first film.
“I think it’s like anything in this day and age — if it makes money, there’s obviously an appetite to make more money. And if it doesn’t do well, they’ll soon sweep it under the carpet. But that’s the way Hollywood works.”
Other cast members that survived in the first film can also be expected to return for the sequel, as the story arc widens. These include Li Bingbing as Suyin, Ruby Rose as Jaxx, Page Kennedy as DJ and Cliff Curtis as James “Mac” Mackreides. Cast details still have to be confirmed, but this seems like the most plausible scenario as of now.
Release Date of The Meg 2
The producer of The Meg, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, confirmed in April 2019 that a script for the sequel is being written.
“We’re working on a script. Yeah. So you never know until you get a good script. I was very thankful that the audience got that we were just trying to have fun, and not take ourselves seriously at all.”
Since the script is still in development, it is still very early to talk about the sequel, let alone a release date. There has been no official release date announced for The Meg 2. Until then, watch the trailer of The Meg right here.
