Following the Royal Wedding in 2018, demand for a third Princess Diaries film has soared again. The second film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, released way back in 2004. Even though it received mostly negative critic reviews, the film still managed to make $134 million at the box office, with a budget of $45 million. The films also established Anne Hathaway as a successful Hollywood actress. The two films are regarded as an important part of the young adult film genre, with young girls all around the world fans of the franchise. Plans for a third Princess Diaries film were announced in 2016.

The Princess Diaries 3: What we know so far
Director of the first two films, Gary Marshall, announced the plans for a third Princess Diaries film in March, 2016. However, following his demise in July in the same year, the plans for the third film were abandoned. Hector Elizondo, who plays the role of Joe in the two films, said in August, 2016 that The Princess Diaries 3 was still on the table.
Fast forward to 2018, Anne Hathaway, who plays the protagonist of the two films, Mia Thermopolis, also stated her interest in doing a third film.
“There is a script for the third movie. I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.”

It is quite clear from her statement that a third Princess Diaries film will happen. Both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews will return for The Princess Diaries 3. Debra Martin Chase will also be back as producer. As for a release date, there has been no official announcement. It is still very soon to speculate a possible release year, with work still going on the script of the film. The fans can only hope to not wait much longer for more updates on the film.
