Who’s ready for some castling? Netflix’s new miniseries The Queen’s Gambit is ready to offer just that, and some more. The show is based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel of the same name. It features chess prodigy Beth Harmon who wishes to become a Grandmaster in the mental sport. Intellectual dramas are usually a delight and this, too, promises to be one, with British-Argentinian-American actress Anya Taylor-Joy playing Beth Harmon. The Queen’s Gambit: Plot and Cast
Anya Taylor-Joy plays the orphan prodigy Beth Harmon, who becomes obsessed with becoming a Grandmaster in chess. The show tracks her journey through addiction with the game as well as other substances. When Beth Harmon was eight, she seemed dull, sullen and quiet to all appearances. However, she feels herself become sharper when she is first introduced to chess, and dedicates her whole life to the sport.
Playing chess makes her feel fully in control and she uses the sport as a lifeline to fuel herself. She manages to get herself to the US Championships when she is sixteen. However, due to the intense pressures and loneliness, she feels thrown off track and feels the need to imbibe in drugs to escape. She starts to become dependent tranquilizers and alcohol to maintain herself.
Other cast members include heartthrob Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Harry Potter star Harry Melling, Moses Ingram, Bill Camp, Marielle Heller, and Rebecca Root.
The Queen’s Gambit: Release Date and Trailer
The miniseries is scheduled to be released on October 23, 2020. Netflix has confirmed six episodes with the chess-themed titles, like the show itself: “Adjournment”, “End Game”, “Exchanges”, “Fork”, and “Middle Game”.
