The Resident is a medical drama television series on Fox. The series is created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi. The Resident is based on the book Unaccountable by author Marty Makary. The Resident was ordered by Fox as a mid-season replacement in May, 2017. The first season premiered in January 2018 and had fourteen episodes, concluding in May 2018. The series was renewed for a second season in May 2018. The second season of The Resident premiered in September 2018, concluding in May 2019, and consisting of 23 episodes. The third season premiered in September 2019, consisting of 20 episodes, and concluding in April 2020.

The Resident was renewed for a fourth season in May, 2020. The third season of The Resident saw an average demo rating of 0.94 in the 18-49 category, sitting at number seven on Fox’s list of scripted shows in 2019-20. In terms of viewership, the third season of The Resident had an average of 5.02 million viewers, sitting at number four on the list of Fox’s scripted shows in 2019-20.
Season 4 of The Resident is set to include the COVID-19 pandemic in its season premiere. The writing team of The Resident consists of several medical professionals, who have assisted in penning the season premiere which focuses on the current pandemic. Co-creator of The Resident, Amy Holden Jones, had this to say about the situation-

All of Fox’s scripted shows have been held until 2021 to accommodate the delays in production due to the current global situation. Season 4 of The Resident is set to premiere in mid-season in 2021.
