The Staircase: Release Date, Trailer and more!

Created and written by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, The Staircase is an upcoming American crime drama streaming television miniseries. The show is based on the 2004 true-crime docuseries of the same name created by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade.

On March 31, 2021, it was announced that HBO Max had given the project a limited series order consisting of eight episodes, with Campos set as showrunner and director of six of the episodes and American Crime Story’s Maggie Cohn joining as a writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner.

The Staircase Plot and Cast

When HBO Max first announced The Staircase in March 2021, the streamer described the upcoming limited series as an exploration of the life of American novelist Michael Peterson, his large and largely supportive North Carolina family, and the mysterious death of his wife, Kathleen in December 2001.

How much of the story will be told throughout the series has yet to be revealed, but those familiar with the case and the twists and turns it took even after Peterson’s conviction know just how crazy this story gets.

The main cast includes Colin Firth as Michael Peterson, Toni Collette as Kathleen Peterson, Rosemarie DeWitt as Candace Hunt Zamperini, Juliette Binoche as Sophie Brunet, Parker Posey as Freda Black, Cullen Moss as Jim Hardin, Sophie Turner as Margaret Ratliff, Odessa Young as Martha Ratliff and Patrick Schwarzenegger as Todd Peterson.

The cast also includes Dane DeHaan as Clayton Peterson, Olivia DeJonge as Caitlin Atwater, Michael Stuhlbarg as David Rudolf, Tim Guinee as Bill Peterson, Joel McKinnon Miller as Larry Pollard, Vincent Vermignon as Jean-Xavier and Frank Feys as Denis Poncet.

We will also get to see Justice Leak as Tom Maher, Robert Crayton as Ron Guerette and Jim Rash as Duane Deaver in recurring roles.

The Staircase Release Date

On November 21, 2019, it was announced that Annapurna Television had officially put the project into development and was shopping the project to premium networks and streaming services.

However, no release date has been set for the miniseries, but HBO notes that it will premiere sometime in Spring 2022.
