West Side Story is an upcoming romantic musical drama directed and produced by Steven Spielberg. West Side Story: Plot and Cast
The story of the music is set in mid-1950s New York City. The neighborhood mostly has multiracial communities with blue-collar workers. Among these lie two main gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are a white gang while the Sharks are from Puerto Rico. New problems arise between the two when Tony falls in love with Maria.
Tony is a former member of the Jets and is the best friend of their leader, Riff. Meanwhile, Maria is the sister of the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo. The play, choreographed by Jerome Robbins, has been lauded for its numerous songs, such as “Somewhere”, “America” and “Something’s Coming”.
The cast for this version of the musical is a highly celebrated one. Ansel Elgort plays Tony while Rachel Zegler plays Maria. Ariana DeBose plays Anita, David Alvarez plays Bernardo and Mike Faist plays Riff. Corey Stoll plays Police Lieutenant Schrank and Brian d’Arcy James plays Police Sergeant Krupke. Curtiss Cook plays Abe.
Rita Moreno, one of the original cast of the 1961 film adaptation plays Valentina in this version. It is amazing to see the celebrated EGOT recipient in this Spielberg film.
