What is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

Our entire lives are online these days – from following the news, to ordering groceries, to unwinding playing a few casino games on reputable online casinos like juicy casino – we do everything online.  But do we know how to reap all the benefits of our online lives?  Let’s see.

There is a growing demand for improved transmission methods to accommodate the expanding capabilities of the Internet of Things. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is one of the most well-known data transmission methods and was conceived particularly to facilitate the operation of IoT applications.

Knowing what this method of communication actually is is the first step toward comprehending how it functions.

What is Bluetooth Low Energy?

The BLE  Bluetooth variant is around 10% more efficient in conserving energy. The difference exists because Bluetooth was developed specifically for data transmission, comparable to when a smartphone is used to play music through a car stereo.

BLE was created with a heavy emphasis on maximizing battery capacity, but it was also intended for data transfer. The goal is to guarantee long-distance data transmission between participating parties. In 2010, with the release of BLE 4.0, this protocol began to gain traction.

Since then, its use has skyrocketed due to the convenience it brought to wireless connections over short and medium distances. Due to its characteristics, a BLE device spends most of its time in a dormant state, waking up only to establish temporary links. This makes it a great choice for applications that only need to send data occasionally.

Applications of BLE Technology

Like the original Bluetooth technology, Bluetooth low energy operates on the 2.4 GHz scientific, industrial, and medical band. Additionally, it operates on non-standard Bluetooth channels.

It uses a technique called Gaussian frequency shift modulation to send data over forty 2-MHz channels. That is accomplished by performing the frequency hopping method between data pulses, hence decreasing interference relative to regular Bluetooth transmissions.

Additionally, direct sequence spread spectrum is optimized for use in BLE to reduce the likelihood of signal interference. In contrast, conventional Bluetooth transmissions use frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS). The latter causes far higher interference than what is experienced with BLE. Keep in mind that BLE is not the same as UWB.

Since BLE is relatively new compared to the original bluetooth technology, most people in different sectors don’t understand its applications and how they can use BLE to improve their operations. Here’s a deep dive into the applications of BLE.

Uses for Bluetooth Low Energy

1. BLE in the retail industry

Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), shops and customers can have instantaneous conversations. Beacons can also monitor shoppers’ movements within a mall to create a more tailored experience and collect valuable data. Lastly, beacons allow stores to broadcast media such as coupons, advertisements, and supplementary product info to customers’ mobile devices.

Tech behemoths like Google have known this for a while and are finally capitalizing on it.

2. BLE in healthcare

Bluetooth low energy technology has several potential uses in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Condition updates from devices like blood pressure or glucose monitors can be transmitted over BLE.

This also works for automated 911 calls. In extreme cases where immediate medical attention is necessary to save a life, this technology would prove invaluable. Simply dialing 9-1-1 or 9-9-9x will activate Internet of Things (IoT) technology to your benefit, whether it be determining your precise location, picking up on Bluetooth beacon signals near patients, or locating their specific addresses, rooms, and floors.

All of the aforementioned data can also be transmitted to emergency personnel.

3. Tracking pets with Bluetooth Low Energy

BLE allows pet owners to reliably monitor their pets’ whereabouts and actions. There are also applications that use this technology to monitor pets’ health and activity levels.

4. BLE’s role in farming

The agricultural industry is absolutely essential to human survival, and any improvement in technology goes a long way in helping boost food security on a global scale. Thanks to Bluetooth low energy technology, Subtidal water temperature, chlorophyll readings, environmental data, etc. can all be conveniently collected and analyzed with the use of beacons.

Sustainable and efficient food production may become increasingly feasible with the help of satellite imaging data and in-depth analysis.

5. BLE as a conversational tool

Bluetooth low technology allows users to answer calls with a simple flip of their device, and it can also function as wireless speakers when paired with various media players. The technology is compatible with both BLE Android and BLE iOS, depending on the mobile phone in use.

6. BLE in sports

As another application of BLE technology, augmented reality glasses with miniature heads-up displays and smart wearables are used by cyclists to monitor crucial data during workouts. As a result, athletes can possibly increase their performance and outcomes while training even as this technology expands into other areas of sports.

7. Bluetooth Low Energy for location tracking

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) applications can be used by airports to track individual routes across terminals. Travelers can use it to find their way to the amenities, baggage claim, and food courts in the terminal’s waiting area. Bluetooth low energy technology has also been implemented by IT firms in museums, enabling visitors to utilize their mobile devices as personal tour guides and information hubs.

Take away

Bluetooth low energy technology facilitates these and countless more processes, creating more opportunities for different sectors to grow and thrive. Bluetooth low energy technology also allows  for more rapid and effective transfers.
