WhatsApp limits its forwarded messages

If you are one of the people who have a habit of forwarding messages to all your friends and family in WhatsApp, you might want to rethink it. With viral content rampant on the platform, the company has set a limit to all their users around the world. WhatsApp users from now will only be able to forward messages to five contacts at a time. In a press released, the company explains via email:

Starting today, all users on the latest version of WhatsApp can now forward to five contacts at once, which will help you keep WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts.

This action might be a response to the 25 mob killings in India that were a victim of viral fake messages spread through WhatsApp. People regularly receive fake messages with topics ranging from earthquakes to free job offers that have a potential to cause false panic. There was a necessity to curb this fall spread of misinformation and WhatsApp has taking one step at a time.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has around 1.5 billion global users of which 200 million users are from India. The messaging platform sees around 60 billion messages per day. So, any misinformation can cause widespread panic. WhatsApp has also experienced a rise in the spread of misinformation, which is then forwarded by people to their families and friends without checking the real facts.

However, the company also notes that it will “look for new ways” to address viral content. After all, not all viral contents are hoaxes and fake news. WhatsApp has previously implemented other measures to curb the spread of hoax messages. This includes prominent labels for forwarded messages and the option to let only the administrators’ post messages in the group.
