The villain of Fast and Furious 6, Owen Shaw, played by Luke Evans, had been seriously injured after the flight crash scene in that film. To avenge the harm caused to him, his brother Deckard Shaw hunts down Dom (Vin Diesel) and his team in Furious 7. When Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) was forced to switch sides and returned to save Dom and his son from the world’s most dangerous hacker Cipher (Charlize Theron) in The Fate of The Furious, Owen Shaw made a surprise appearance in the film’s climax. He aided Deckard in the mission to rescue Dom’s son from Cipher’s clandestine airplane. Dom had made a pact with the mother of Shaw brothers, Magdalene (Helen Miller), to aid him in getting back his son.
The first franchise spin-off, Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw saw the reunion of Hobbs and Deckard for a deadly mission. The families of both of them eventually show up in the spectacular action thriller. Shaw’s sister Vanessa Kirby as Hattie and their mother Magdalene wittily encounter Deckard as he embarks on his mission with Hobbs. But Owen does not show up in the Shaw family reunion. Interestingly his name is not even mentioned once in the entire film. This was quite unusual and disappointing for fans.
Screenrant asked Hobbs and Shaw director David Leitch the reason behind Owen’s total absence. “I don’t know. I didn’t have a backstory in mind for Owen’s character or where he was. But I’m sure he’s doing something in Shaw’s universe with Queenie, and he could arise at any time in this world. For sure,” said Leitch. “I think we are, again, a world that is expanding. We have a lot of stories that we’re going to be telling and a lot of interconnected character things. I would just say that I’m a huge fan of that character. Just wait,” he added.
Despite Leitch affirms Owen’s return, he is not a part of Fast and Furious 9. So that leaves us to wait for Hobbs and Shaw 2, whenever it comes, if it comes, to anticipate Luke Evans’ reprisal in the franchise.
