The show will air on PBS, PBS.org, and the PBS Video App on August 29 at 9 p.m. EST.
What is this about?
The concert, directed by Baayork Lee, is intended to commemorate Broadway’s reopening after the 16-month Covid epidemic closure. This show will feature new, never-before-heard Wicked musical arrangements developed specifically for this broadcast by music director and conductor Luke Frazier.
The Broadway huge hit “Wicked” takes a fresh look at what happened in the Land of Oz…from a different perspective. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin who is intelligent, fiery, misunderstood, and gifted. Their initial competition transforms into the unlikeliest of friendships when she meets a vivacious blonde who is extremely popular… Until the world labels one as “good” and the other as “wicked.”
“Wicked,” based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, features Stephen Schwartz’s music and lyrics, as well as Winnie Holzman’s book. Tony Award winner Joe Mantello directs the show, which also features Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento’s musical staging. Marc Platt, Universal Stage Productions, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone are the producers of “Wicked.”
As per Deadline, the musical’s original Broadway stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel will co-host PBS’ upcoming Wicked in Concert special. Tony winners Rita Moreno, Cynthia Erivo, Gavin Creel, and Ali Stroker, as well as Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles, are all scheduled to play.
