Will ‘Cheers’ leave Netflix this July?

Classic American sitcom ‘Cheers’ seasons 1 to 11 are set depart from Netflix on 1^st July 2020. This comes as a part of another big removal off Netflix after the recent removal of FRIENDS from Netflix US. This jovial sitcom aired on NBC from 1982 to 1993 for eleven consecutive seasons and has over 275 episodes in total with 22 minutes of average runtime.

Though Cheers initially aired on NBC, its rights are owned by CBS. The show with all its seasons has been streaming on Netflix for several years. During its original run, the show was about to get canceled after its fifth season due to the downfall of ratings. But gradually it becomes one of the highly-rated series of all time with a record 117 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations and winning 28 of them. Its spin-off show ‘Fraiser’ featured one of the main characters Dr. Fraiser Crane in the lead and featured almost the entire top cast of the original show. Fraiser also ran for 11 seasons starting from 1993 until 2004.

Why are Cheers going to Leave Netflix?

The reason for this departure is simple. The licensing deal between CBS and Netflix for Cheers is over.  Moreover, NBC Universal is going to launch its own streaming platform, Peacock. Probably the NBC is looking forward to reprising the superhit classic on its new digital platform.

Besides, Cheers will not be the only top-notch NBC series to disappear from Netflix. Friends moved from Netflix US to HBO Max recently this month, though it is still present on Netflix for other countries.  Parks and Recreation will leave the streamer in October and Steve Carell starer The Office is set to depart in 2021.

Where will Cheers be Available in July?

Cheers are currently available on Netflix US, Hulu as well as CBS All Access. It will continue to be present on the latter two streamers in July and afterward. It is anticipated to also show up on NBC’s Peacock, but this has not been confirmed yet.
