Street Fighter founder and experienced Capcom creator Yoshinori Ono has resigned from the organization and will leave Capcom, he revealed on Sunday. Ono answered criticism of this year’s Capcom Pro Tour tournament layout. The format shifted exclusively online because of the coronavirus pandemic, in a post on Twitter, and announced his imminent departure.
Ono joined Capcom in the early 1990s and worked on the Street Fighter franchise as a sound producer. He’s perhaps better known as the Street Fighter 4 maker, who resurrected the franchise after a break that lasted nearly a decade. Ono worked as executive producer on several Capcom franchises, including Monster Hunter and Darkstalkers. He also worked as director of Capcom Vancouver’s Dead Rising studio.
But Ono was most prominent in his director roles on Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter 5, portraying the series in person at fan events and tournaments.
Capcom revealed in May that it will expand support of Street Fighter 5, to 2021 with the fifth season of characters and gameplay improvements.
Street Fighter 5 game designer Takayuki Nakayama and producer Shuhei Matsumoto have recently announced new characters: Dan Hibiki, Rose, Oro, and Akira. Capcom is rumored to be developing Street Fighter 6.
Sometime this summer Ono will be resigning from his position as executive producer of Street Fighter and general marketing president of Capcom. After working for more than two decades on the Street Fighter franchise and guiding it through several generations of consoles, Executive Producer Yoshinori Ono leaves the organization.

During his years at Capcom, Ono contributed to many other games outside of Street Fighter like Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and Devil May Cry. He is still incredibly active on Twitter, but almost all of his tweets have been about Street Fighter.
The message doesn’t clarify the reason for Ono’s exit, either what he’s going to do next, or whether he’s taking retirement from the industry for good or only from the company.
