The Next-Gen Mobile Uses We’ll Take for Granted

Published

on

Back around the year 2000, many of us were already placing our predictions on the direction of mobile devices. Following established patterns, we knew they’d get smaller and smaller, that we’d rely on minutes more than ever, and that games on the systems were simple distractions at best. As is so often the case, many of these predictions turned out to be, shall we say, off-mark.

Today, smartphones and our reliance on mobile technology are greater than ever, leading to a situation where we again feel confident in predicting the next generation of ubiquitous uses. Unlike last time, a more established market and undeniable benefits make the following changes all but inevitable, so don’t be surprised if you notice these systems popping up around your community.

Biometric Security

Passwords are a necessity in data security, but they’re also an enormous hassle. Good security practices mean a combination of lower and uppercase letters, symbols, and a length of at least ten characters. Factor in the need to remember a dozen different passwords for different systems, and a requirement to regularly change these passwords, and this necessity becomes a growing thorn in our daily lives.

As explored by ExpressVPN’s article on biometrics, newer solutions could eliminate this problem in its entirety. By using unique personal biological identifiers and being linked with your phone, biometric systems demonstrate the next generation of convenience and security. From their already proven effectiveness in unlocking your phone, biometrics can also be adapted into payment systems, smart home identification, and even travel documents.

Mobile Work Systems

Laptops are almost ideal as work systems, save for their weight and size. With docking technology like the system reviewed at TechRadar, your phone could instead serve as a much more convenient replacement. To get these to function, all a user would need when they arrive at work is to insert their system into the dock, after which a screen and keyboard/mouse combo would associate and operate as a traditional system.

Going a step further, it could also be possible to avoid a dock completely and rely on high-speed Wi-Fi connections to modify changed data for access with any regular desktop workstation. Simply by putting your phone next to a work or home computer, data could be updated near instantly. This would mean a fast and secure way to transport and work on files without the need for carrying space.

Home Automation

Smart home systems are a step forward in technology that offers more than just gimmicks. When properly implemented, smart homes can add enormous convenience, save power, and even provide advantages to health, as noted in this article by HealthCareDive.

When tied to a phone, home automation systems could warm your rooms, schedule automatic cleaning, and ensure washing is finished on time, all while knowing exactly when you’ll be around. No more tripping over Roomba’s, arriving to washing that has been sitting in the machine gathering smells, or leaving the heating on so you don’t return to a freezing house.

The best thing about all these technologies is that, to some extent, they’re already available. While it might be some time before they become standard, to forward-thinking users, advantages are already possible. The learning curve is gentler than you might imagine, and since you might have to learn how to operate these systems eventually anyway, getting ahead could prove a worthwhile use of your time and money.
