Live-action series of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be a Netflix Original!

Great news for Avatar fans! The original brains behind the classic anime, currently are working on a live-action series adaptation of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. They will be the show’s executive producers and showrunners.

What is Production Status?

The show is currently in the pre-production phase. The production was to begin in 2020. Without the ongoing pandemic crisis, we could have expected the show’s release sometime during end of 2021. But now it seems that the show might not premiere on Netflix until 2022.

Cast and Crew

Michael DiMartino and Byron Konietzko

No official announcements regarding the cast have been made. The showrunners are looking forward to casting mostly Asians, as their ethnicities will be most appropriate for the characters of the anime. But the crew for the project is surely getting bigger and better. John Chol Lee is on-board as the concept designer for the series. Lee has previously contributed to ‘Big Hero 6’, ‘Beowulf’ and ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’. Moreover, the original anime show’s composer Jeremy Zuckerman will also reprise his role behind the scenes for the live-action remake.

Plot

The timeless modern classic will tell the story of the 16-year-old Airbender Avatar Aang and his endeavors to restore peace in the four elemental kingdoms, each consisting of special individuals or ‘benders’, having telekinetic powers over one of the four essential elements air, water, fire, and earth. Benders can only influence the element of the kingdom they are born into. But only the Avatar has the special ability to bend all four elements and is embarked with the responsibility of maintaining peace and harmony across the world. When Aang reappeared after mysteriously disappearing for 100 years, he must do his duty when the Fire Nation has attacked the other three neighbors to attain total dominance.

Is the show related to the live-action movie adaptation of 2010?

The show is not related in any way to the M. Night Shyamalan’s movie adaptation which released in 2010. The movie had been an utter disappointment in comparison to the anime. It had been vehemently slammed by the fans as well the critics. Even the showrunner duo expressed their dislike for the movie and claimed that the series will be way better than that one.

Netflix recently launched all three seasons the Nickelodeon anime on its platform.
