OPPO today unveiled a new technology that made all the notches, pop-up and cutouts irrelevant. The iPhone X introduced the notched design, while manufacturers adopted the punch-hole display design last year. These technologies might be clever from a design standpoint but looks really distracting and unappealing.
OPPO VP Brian Shen shared a video of a working prototype that has a selfie camera built under the display. The company’s official Twitter account gave another look at this new approach to selfie camera placement and we are sold. The new technology will help in reducing or even elimination of the bezels.
In the short 15 minute video, the user launches the camera app and even take some sample shots. The sensor is located in the upper middle portion of the screen. It flashes for a second similar to how the Samsung S10 devices do when switching to the front camera. The video makes no mention of how the technology works.
Just hours after OPPO posted this update, Xiaomi posted a video of its own in-screen camera technology in a working handset. Xiaomi’s tech looks more polished and ahead of OPPO’s. Even these are still prototypes, we get a glimpse of the smartphone technology we can expect in the future.
OPPO has not provided any information on when the technology will launch in the market. The company’s VP did say that the optical quality of such sensor is still inferior to the regular front-facing camera and will take some time to perfect the process.
OPPO has finally cracked the selfie-camera dilemma giving the people of the world the first look at its under-display camera. The company is known to fast-track its technological advancements and bring them into the market quickly. So, we can expect to have this tech on our hands sooner or later.
