There have been three Power Rangers films to date, with the latest one being a reboot of the franchise. The American television franchise was inspired by the Japanese series called Super Sentai. The television series inspired the three Power Rangers films as well. Power Rangers (2017) was a reboot of the franchise. The film was directed by Dean Israelite and written by John Gatins. It was produced by Lionsgate. The film features the characters from the original television series, but with a new cast. Power Rangers was not a big success, getting mixed reviews and only grossing $142 million on a $105 million budget. A sequel was planned but was later canceled. The franchise will see another reboot in the form of a new Power Rangers film.
Power Rangers reboot: What we know so far
The Power Rangers film of 2017 had a disappointing run at the box office. Following that, Hasbro decided to reboot the franchise again, with a totally new cast and crew, with none of the original cast or directors returning. In a Reddit AMA in July 2019, Dacre Montgomery, who played the role of the Red Ranger, confirmed the same.
So we now know that another reboot is indeed in the works. In December 2019, it was reported that the creator of the Netflix series The End of the F***ing World, Jonathan Entwistle will be directing the reboot. The script will be written by Patrick Burleigh. The film is expected to be based in the 1990s and will feature time travel as well.
Hasbro, who bought the rights to the Power Rangers from Saban Brands in 2018, said that they will focus on rebooting the franchise with another studio. The reboot is now in the hands of the production company Paramount Pictures. No other cast or release information is out as of now, but we can expect some more updates about the new Power Rangers film soon.
