Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes has been the most portrayed literary character of all time. Most notable of these are two performances; Robert Downey Jr’s. portrayal of the famous detective in the famous movie franchise, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC series. And now, fans of the famous detective have another reason to be happy, Sherlock Holmes 3 has been confirmed!
After Guy Ritchie’s first two Holmes films, Warner Bros. Studios, in 2019, hired Dexter Fletcher to direct the third film in the franchise.
The story of Sherlock Holmes so far
In the last outing, Holmes and Watson travel across Europe with a Romani advunteress to foil James Moriarty’s plot to instigate war across Europe. Sherlock Holmes was presumed dead until the final scene of the movie, wherein he camouflages with Watson’s sofa. This obviously opened up speculation to a third Sherlock Holmes film, which was confirmed Warner Bros. after the release of the second film, in 2011.
However, due to the busy schedules of all the actors involved, there have been several delays in the production of the film. The lack of a good script has also hampered efforts to produce the film as early as possible. But now, a definitive release date for the third film has been set and things look optimistic for the release of the film finally.
Cast and Release Date
Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Jude Law will also reprise his role of Dr. John Watson. It is still unclear whether Jared Harris will return to his role of Professor James Moriarty, since he supposedly died in A Game of Shadows. Stephen Fry, Kelly Reilly, and Eddie Marsan also remain uncomfirmed to reprise their roles of Mycroft Holmes, Mary Watson and Inspector Lestrade, respectively.
In May, 2018, Warner Bros. announced that Sherlock Holmes 3 will release on December 25, 2020. However, the release of the film was postponed by Warner Bros. in March, 2019. The film now stands to release in theatres on December 22, 2021.
