Is Walking Dead Season 10 the most watched cable TV show this year?

Zombie-apocalyptic thriller The Walking Dead was the most-watched cable TV drama of 2019-2020 despite the overall drop in the viewership since the last few seasons. Though cable TV is still in the game, digital streaming platforms are beginning to have an upper hand. The main advantage remains that streaming platforms release their original shows exclusively available only on their platform and all episodes of a season are out at once to keep users binge-watching. People have also begun totally opt out of cable subscriptions as the streamers also provide cable TV shows once they are aired. As counter-measure TV channels have started launching their own streaming platforms, like HBO Max, NBC’s Peacock, and AMC Premiere. New episodes of AMC shows can be watched two days before their air date online on AMC Premiere. This quite an interesting tactic used to attract new customers.

In midst of such cut-throat competition to cable TV, the tenth season of a series topping the most-watched list is a commendable achievement. The show re-invented itself after Angela Kang took over as the new showrunner and the lead character Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln given retirement.

Being AMC’s one of the most successful series, The Walking Dead Season 10 had 5.4 million viewers on average and a rating of 1.9 among adults. The release of season finale has been postponed due to the pandemic crisis and will come out later during this year. Moreover, the show’s producer Greg Nicotero claims that finale is worth the delay. The post-production work on the finale was interrupted when the pandemic-lockdowns were initialized. “It’s a really amazing episode,” he said to Entertainment Weekly Live. “I love the way episode 15 ends where you see Beta bringing the herd to the tower where everybody is holed up. There’s a lot teed up, so to speak.”
