Brett Haley himself said “The story’s not easy,” when asked about the film’s interest. This Netflix Movie centers around a teenager Amber Appleton who has her dreams and sufferings. It focuses on finding hope and believing in oneself even when life is harsh. Even though one might seem to be all “happy and gay” on the outside, it is really tough to comprehend what sort of challenges they face.

On the surface, Amber Appleton appears to have a stable life, she is full of positivity, but there are more layers than just the surface. She is a musically gifted high school student and her dream is to attain admission at Carnegie Mellon University. She works at a doughnut shop and at the same time balances her high school drama club. Amber also spends time as a volunteer at the local retirement community. She works hard to support herself and her single mother. She sleeps on the school bus, yes, that is one of the many harsh realities in Amber’s life. Amber faces major adversities in her life, her friends and mentors offer her help. “Will Amber learn to accept a helping hand?”.
