Cobra Kai

Developed by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, Cobra Kai is an American martial arts comedy-drama television series distributed by Sony Pictures Television and streaming on Netflix. The series is a sequel to the original The Karate Kid films by Robert Mark Kamen.

The first season of the show premiered on May 2, 2018. This was followed by the second season on April 24, 2019. Season 3 was released on January 1, 2021, followed by Season 4 on December 31, 2021.

So, when will Cobra Kai Season 5 release? What is the plot? Who will return to reprise their roles? Continue reading to know further details.

Cobra Kai Plot and Cast

According to co-showrunners Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz, the biggest game changer is the return of Chozen Toguchi from Karate Kid II at the end of season four. In an interview with TVLine, they said,

“Chozen is somebody who ties into the more aggressive past where fighting wasn’t about a contest, it was about life and death. He still feels like he owes Daniel some help, and he wants to make amends even though Daniel has forgiven him. From that alone, I feel like audiences can infer the energy with which season 5 is going to begin. There are quite a bit of storylines that start spinning very fast and very aggressively as we enter next season.”

Ralph Macchio

The finale of Season 4 saw Terry Silver double-crossing Kreese, resulting in the latter’s arrest. It seems like Silver could pose the biggest threat from this point onwards.

The fate of Miyagi-Do is in a tricky position heading into the new run, since he is no longer a functioning dojo as a result of the bet made over the All-Valley tournament. The future of the Dojo may rest in the hands of Tory, whose knowledge about Silver’s bribery could potentially see her come to the rescue.

There’s also the matter of Miguel, who ran away to Mexico in a bid to find his father – and it’s likely that Johnny will be occupied trying to find him in Season 5.

Now, talking about the cast it stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, who reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the 1984 film The Karate Kid and its sequels, The Karate Kid Part II (1986) and The Karate Kid Part III (1989).

Set 34 years later, Cobra Kai continues the original Karate Kid saga, last seen in The Next Karate Kid (1994). In particular, it re-examines the “Miyagi-Verse” narrative from Johnny’s point of view, his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel.

Cobra Kai also stars Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Peyton List, and Vanessa Rubio, with Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith also reprising their roles from the films.

However, the number of episodes and runtime for the upcoming season is yet to be revealed. Season 5 is expected to have 10 episodes like the previous four seasons.
