Cobra Kai Shifts To A New Home, From YouTube Premium To Netflix!

Cobra Kai, the spinoff of The Karate Kid moves to a new home. The action-comedy series shifts from YouTube Premium to Netflix! The streaming giant acquired the show and will release a third season after the release of the first 2 seasons. The release of the series on Netflix paves the way for great exposure!

Here’s what creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald have to say about this huge shift:

“Making Cobra Kai has been a dream come true for us since day one. We are thankful for the tireless dedication of Jeff Frost, Chris Parnell, Jason Clodfelter, Karen Tatevosian and all our partners at Sony for finding us a new home where we can not only continue the series but also explore opportunities to further expand The Karate Kid universe. We are beyond excited to join our new partners at Netflix and look forward to the show reaching the massive global audience who loves this franchise as much as we do.”

What Is The Story Of Cobra Kai?

The series was presented in an episodic storytelling format. Cobra Kai is set 34 years after the movie and re-examines the narrative from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view. His decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo leads to the revival of his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso. The series projects a sincere story from Lawrence’s point of view. The show reverses the entire dynamic of the movie. Daniel is the owner of a car dealership in the series and he mentors Johnny’s son, Robby. The story revolves around primary relationships among the main characters and this leads to conflicts. These conflicts are a product of Johnny and Daniel’s inability to put the past behind them! The drama intensifies in season 2 with the return of John Kreese, the Svengali sensei.

What Is The Cast Of Cobra Kai?

The main cast includes William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence, Ralph Macchio as Daniel, and Tanner Buchanan as Robby. Xolo Mariduena, Martin Kove, Courtney Henggeler and Mary Mouser also play important roles. They play Miguel Diaz, John Kreese, Amanda LaRusso, and Samantha LaRusso respectively.

Why Was The Shift Made To Netflix From YouTube Premium?

One of the major disadvantages the show had was the response on its original platform. Cobra Kai received positive responses and gained attention on YouTube. But the verbal praise alone was not enough to increase subscribers. In a desperate attempt to gain subscribers, the show was posted for free for a short period. That did not prove successful either. The series exited from YouTube in May 2020 and landed on Netflix!

The Vice President, Original Series, Netflix states that:

“The appeal of The Karate Kid saga is timeless and Cobra Kai picks up right where it left off without missing a beat. The rivalry between Daniel and Johnny is one for the ages and the show has a ton of heart and is a lot of fun. We can’t wait to introduce a new generation of fans to Cobra Kai and are thrilled to be its new home around the world.”

Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger and teased the return of Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills! There could be more comebacks from The Karate Kid: Part II also. We are glad that Sony Pictures Television went through with this deal and super excited for the response on Netflix! Stay tuned for more updates on Cobra Kai.

I am a passionate writer just trying to figure out life and myself. Writing has always been a way of expressing myself, hence most of my work is pretty raw and unprocessed. I try my best to be unapologetic about what I write. This internship in ByProduct Ventures has allowed me to push myself and see what all I am capable of. I have always pictured the future me as someone very creative and this opportunity takes me one step towards that. Apart from writing, I also love expressing myself by painting or drawing. All I want from life is to keep learning, falling and rising and to live every moment like it is my last! (aditigautam1705@gmail.com)
