Doctor Strange brought to the Marvel Cinematic Universe the magical element from the Marvel Comics and the possibility of expanding the MCU into the multiverse that is depicted in the comics. The film was both a critical and commercial success, raking in $678 million worldwide. In July 2019, at the San Diego Comic-Con, the head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige announced the sequel to Doctor Strange. The film has been titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film will be part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cast of Doctor Strange 2
Benedict Cumberbatch had said in 2017 that he had signed on for at least one sequel to the first film. We will be seeing him reprise his role as Dr. Stephen Strange/Sorcerer Supreme. Benedict Wong is also believed to be back in his role as Wong. Chiwetel Ejiofor was confirmed as part of the sequel in February 2020. He will be reprising his role as Karl Mordo in the film. In a surprise addition to the film, Elizabeth Olsen, who plays the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the MCU, will also be part of the sequel. This announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019.
When the sequel was announced, the director of the first film, Scott Derrickson was still at the helm of the sequel. However, in January 2020, citing creative differences, he announced that he will be leaving the project as director but would stay on as an executive producer. In April 2020, Sam Raimi was hired as director, and Michael Waldron was hired to rewrite the script. Rachel McAdams, who played the role of Christine Palmer in the first film, will also not be returning for the sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will tie up with the events in the Disney+ series WandaVision and Loki, which will also be part of the MCU.
