Evo 2020 has been renamed to “Evo Online”

The 2020 Evolution Championship Series is a game-fighting event. Though a physical event was scheduled to take place in Las Vegas from July 31st to August 2nd, 2020 as part of the long-running Evolution Championship Series. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizations canceled the event. They planned a series of online events from July 4th to August 2nd, 2020.

Since the annual in-person celebration in Las Vegas is canceled this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, “EVO Online” will spring up.

Many big gaming gatherings, including E3, Game Developers Conference, and Gamescom, have switched to online-only activities this year as a result of the pandemic. Several big software conferences, including the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference and the Microsoft Build Developer Summit, are now being organized online.

Details of Evo Online

Joey Cuellar, the chief promoter of Evo 2020, announced the first line-up of games to be played at the Twitch streaming festival on 4 February 2020. The titles are as follows:

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Tekken 7
  • Street Fighter V Champion Edition
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus

Also, four open tournaments will apply to everyone else in the following games. Such games have been chosen due to their use of a “rollback” networking protocol that allows for nearly zero-latency online gaming.

  • Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath
  • Killer Instinct
  • Them’s Fightin’ Herds
  • Skullgirls 2nd Encore

The format will also be radically different; rather than occurring over a single, long weekend, Evo Online will occur during five weekends in July. Evo Online will take place on the following dates:

  • July 4-5
  • July 11-12
  • July 18-19
  • July 25-26
  • July 31-Aug 2

In all, there’ll be 13 games on Evo Online counterpart to the main stage of the competition, all of which will be played over five weekends. It would be fascinating to see how the transition to online matches would affect the preparations for the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Champions Tournament.

The reaction to the change was largely positive, and while there was frustration at the loss of Smash Ultimate, the decision was generally accepted by the audience. It is likely to be attributed to tournament organizers who do not want to contend with players who are continuously distracted or the low overall success of the online net code game, including for exhibitions.

Plays will head-to-head in Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, Killer Instinct, Them’s Fightin Herds, and Skullgirls 2nd Encore. Signup and event details are arriving early, and the action begins on the 4th of July.
