Things I Wish I Knew About SEO When I Started My Career

Published

on

SEO is a living, breathing entity that is constantly evolving and changing. This is a good thing, because those changes mean the playing field will continue to be leveled for the next generation of SEOs who follow in my footsteps. But SEO isn’t just about Google (and Google isn’t the only search engine out there). It’s about making sure your website and content meet your customer’s needs and creating an environment where they will want to return.

If you’re looking to get started in the world of Search Engine Optimization, it can be pretty daunting, but outsource SEO services from Skailed can help. There’s a lot of information out there and not a lot of places that break it down for the beginner. I’ve put together this list of things I wish I knew when I first got started in SEO. Hopefully, you’ll find some useful tips here.

Start with the basics

Content is king, links are queen, and social signals are your court jester (don’t let him fool you though because he’s got plenty of power). When everyone tells you to write for users and not search engines, they’re right… mostly. Writing for users means writing useful content that people will want to share on social media and link back to without editing it first. Write with your audience in mind first, but keep search engines in the back of your mind as well, because they do influence rankings in the end.

Treat every interaction like a sales call

I learned this from Michael Port months ago. Things you say or do online are like sales calls or pitches to potential customers, so take that approach when you’re interacting with anyone. In fact, treat everyone as if they were a potential customer: those who already know about your product or service and those who don’t yet know what you offer. Let me give you an example. Next time you have a conversation with someone, pay attention to how they react to your responses. If they get excited by what you say, ask more questions, and smile while talking to you—that’s someone who would be glad to do business with you! If they have a negative reaction—they’re not interested in what you have to say, don’t care about your answers—they’re going to continue doing business with someone else. The same is true of online interactions; treat them all like sales calls!

What Is the Difference Between Organic and PPC?

Organic traffic is free traffic that comes from search engines like Google while paid traffic is any traffic that is driven by campaigns that you pay for. For example, Facebook ads or AdWords on Google.

How To Make Sure Your SEO Is Working

There are many ways to gauge whether your SEO is working, but one of the easiest ones is tracking your keyword rankings. If your keywords aren’t ranking for what you want them to, then something isn’t working right. Consider seeking local SEO consulting to enhance your strategy and improve your online visibility in specific geographic areas.

Know Your Audience

There are tons of different niches to choose when you do SEO. But before you go into any niche, you have to know who you’re targeting. Create buyer personas who are interested in your products/services, and then start researching about them to know more about their behaviors and needs.

Keyword Research & Analytics

Find out what keywords people are using in Google search to find your products/services. Then, track that data using Google Analytics so you can see how many visitors come from those keywords, how much time they spend on your website, which pages they visit, etc. This will help you understand what kind of people visit your site and guide the content you should create for them.
