Xiaomi Mi A3 to launch with an in-display fingerprint scanner

Lately, Xiaomi has shaken the market by launching contenders like Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro. While both these smartphones have already won hearts of Mi fans, Xiaomi is now aiming up for the next level. That said, a new report suggests that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi A3 will come with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Notably, a report from XDA-Developers reveals that Xiaomi has started testing three new smartphones.  Out of which, two are likely Android One devices. The three phones are codenamed “Pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout”, and “cosmos_sprout.” For starters, the suffix _sprout has been previously seen in the devices under Google’s Android One program. Given that the third handset lacks the suffix, it is likely to arrive as Mi 7X.

Moreover, Xiaomi has its A-series of smartphones under Android One programme. Therefore, it is being speculated that both the Android One devices being tested are none other than Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite. Furthermore, all three handsets are said to be under testing with “FOD,” or fingerprint on display. It is apparently the same in-display fingerprint scanner technology, termed differently by different manufacturers.

Indeed, the in-display fingerprint scanner is going to be the next big thing in mid-range smartphones. Manufacturers like Oppo and Vivo have already proved that implementing this tech is no more expensive. The former recently launched the Oppo K1 smartphone in India. The handset comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, AMOLED display alongside Snapdragon 660 SoC for just Rs. 16,990. Vivo, on the other hand, was first to offer in-display FP in mid-range with the Vivo V11 Pro.

Thus, it’s clear that Xiaomi is capable enough to provide a powerful smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner under Rs. 20,000 as for the Indian market.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Specifications (Expected)

As for the specs, it’s safe to assume that both the Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite will sport AMOLED displays. The fingerprint scanners here will be the optical ones as the ultrasonic technology is costly at the moment and requires expensive flexible AMOLED displays.

Moving further, the report also hints that all the three smartphones will bear 32MP selfie cameras like the Vivo V15 Pro, but with 4-in-1 pixel binning tech. Being budget smartphones, we can expect either of the Snapdragon 675/ 710 on Mi A3 and SD 636/ 660 on the Mi A3 Lite. However, given that there isn’t any strong confirmation, we request you to take this information with a pinch of salt. The Mi A3 line-up is expected to debut in August this year. Stay tuned for more updates.
