Great news for RPG fans as 2023 promises exciting new role-playing releases.
Role-playing games are exciting and work as great stress busters. A 2019 survey by Statista revealed that 71% of gamers in the US reported that playing RP games relieved them of stress and helped calm their nerves. No wonder the United States is amongst the top countries in the global gaming market in terms of revenue and number of RPG gamers. If you are one of them, this article is sure to make you super excited.
The year 2023 will be packed with the best multiplayer and single-player RPGs. These brilliantly crafted games will be even more seamless and immersive than the previous ones.
Here’s a list of some of the best upcoming RPG releases of 2023.
- The Lords of the Fallen
A great option for avid gamers who are always on the lookout for new dark fantasy RPGs. The Lords of the Fallen is expected to release in late April this year. It is a souls-like immersive RPG that will let players use powerful weapons and magic while battling against a plethora of characters. Instantly get transported into a beautiful dark fantasy world where you can become a dark crusader on a mission to defeat the demon God, Adyr.
- Diablo 4
Expected to release on June 6, 2023, Diablo IV is one of the most thrilling offerings by Blizzard Entertainment. The new RPG is beautifully designed for daredevils who prefer dark themes and dangerous fantasy escapades. This hack-and-slay game comes with a nightmarish theme and allows players to use melee weapons and get into close combat with their opponents.
- Final Fantasy 16
Final Fantasy is hands down one of the most anticipated games this year. The developers at Square Enix have revealed that it will be a 35-hour long game for the basic run. However, for completionist players, it can run for 70 to 80 hours. The game is set in the realm of Valisthea and is centred on Clive Rosfield as the protagonist who uses melee and magic attacks with summoned monsters called Eikons.
Final Fantasy will be available in two performance modes. The one with enhanced graphics will feature 4K visuals at 2160p and a 30fps target. The other version will have a better Frame Rate of 60fps at 1440p.
- Starfield
Scheduled to release on September 6, 2023, Starfield is the latest offering in 25 years by Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. This RPG is set amongst the stars and is a single-player game. The users will take the role of a last group of space explorers. Starfield players will be able to customize their characters’ facial features, skin tone and hair as well as unlock skill systems and craft weapon mods.
- Hogwarts Legacy
After the initial release on 10 February 2023 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, Avalanche Software has announced to release Hogwarts Legacy on May 5, 2023, for PS4 and Xbox One. The game will be available for Nintendo Switch in July 2023.
Hogwarts Legacy is undoubtedly one of the most awaited new RPGs of 2023. It is set during the late 1800s and is based on the Harry Potter storyline. Players will become powerful wizards and witches, possessing strong magic powers and brewing magic potions. They will explore the world of Harry Potter and battle against dark wizards on the way.
- Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian Studios has announced to release its Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game called Baldur’s Gate 3 on August 31, 2023. It will be available for MacOS, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC but not Xbox, for reasons best known to the developers.
The RPG will include both a single-player and cooperative multiplayer element. Unlike the previous franchises, Baldur’s Gate 3 will use tactical turn-based combat, similar to Larian’s earlier Divinity game series.
- Sea of Stars
A fun game for both amateur and experienced gamers alike, Sea of Stars is a feel-good story with bright and stunning pixel graphics. Players will explore and keep the fantasy realm safe by batting against the evil alchemist, The Fleshmancer.
Sea of Stars is turn-based JRPG set on a retro theme. Players can use the powers of the sun and moon and can also generate solar and lunar eclipses with the Eclipse Magic.
- Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster
While we know Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is set to release in 2023, Konami is yet to announce the official release date. This is the remastered version of the 1995 era Suikoden 1 and 2 which were extremely popular amongst PlayStation players.
The RPG is based on a Chinese novel and includes over 100 protagonists. It has everything from royal kingdoms, armies, mosters, heroes to demons and dragons. The new version will incorporate HD backgrounds and mix 2D and 3D gameplay.
With the exception of Starfield, all of the games listed will eventually be available on PC, Playstation and Xbox – with a few caveats. Starfield will remain exclusive to Xbox whilst Final Fantasy 16 will be exclusive to PlayStation for the first 6 months. Baldur’s Gate does not have exclusivity to any console but there is no confirmed date for an Xbox launch as yet.
Whilst Playstation and Xbox compete over exclusivity rights, PC gamers can expect to play these games on their launch this year. Get ready to upgrade your gaming keyboard, pc and chair for an action packed RPG year.
