Published

Peaky Blinders has a notorious history of killing many fan favorites. The series has seen all friends, Brother, enemies, and even wife of Tommy being gunned down. Still, there is one character who has betrayed the all-powerful Tommy Shelby twice, yet is still alive. Surprisingly has still control and is making deals with Tommy. Why are creators sympathetic to such a character?

Tom Hardy plays a Jewish Gangster named Alfie Solomons based out of Camden Town, London. He runs a bakery that covers up for a distillery. Initially, he is locked in a battle for control in London with the Italian Darby Sabini. Alfie and Tommy form alliances against the Italians. Alfie has a history of betraying his partners. He has betrayed Tommy already and got a bullet in return. Yet in season 5 we find that he is alive and still in power.

Steven Knight answered that “It wasn’t really a conversation, it was just ‘Alfie can’t die’ basically. I was talking before about it’s difficult when you’ve got a character you really like and is really popular writing them out. It was a consideration as you can imagine but in conversations and texts back and forth we agreed that Alfie can’t die and we couldn’t do it without him. And I’m so glad because he really adds something to it. I know that a lot of people love that character and that look and what he brings to the show. So I’m glad we had that text and phone conversation times a few!”
