The Last Duel: Plot and Cast
The movie tells the story of the last officially recognised duel in France. On December 29, 1386, a trial by combat took place in France between Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and squire Jacques Le Gris. Jean de Carrouges accused Le Gris of raping his wife Marguerite de Carrouges née de Thibouville.
He first sought legal respite but with no avail. He also went to King Charles VI to seek an appeal for the decision by Count Pierre d’Alençon as he believed the latter favoured Le Gris. When it didn’t work out, they arranged the duel.
Whoever remained alive at the end will be declared the winner according to God’s will. If Jean de Carrouges lost, then Marguerite de Carrouges will be burnt at stake for making a ‘false statement’ about being raped.
Matt Damon plays Jean de Carrouges while Jodie Comer plays Marguerite de Carrouges. Adam Driver plays Jacques Le Gris while Ben Affleck plays King Charles VI.
