Werewolf the Apocalypse: Earthblood Release Date, Trailer, Gameplay and Plot!

Fans of White Wolf’s World of Darkness were thrilled when the news of a video game adaptation of the tabletop game Werewolf: The Apocalypse was announced.

The game was unveiled at E3 2019. Here’s everything we know about Cyanide’s latest game, Werewolf the Apocalypse: Earthblood.

Release Date

Werewolf The Apocalypse; Earthblood was announced years ago, and with no information following for a long time, led people to believe that the game was stuck in development hell or even canceled altogether.

It was, however, finally unveiled at E3 2019 and given a proper title as well, with an official release date of February 21st, 2021 being announced.

The game will be available to purchase on PC, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One X/S, and Xbox Series X/S.

In the World of Darkness lore, the werewolves – Garou – are the Earth’s protectors and they strive to preserve it from the corrupting influence of the Wyrm, a destructive cosmic force.

The game follows Cahal, a werewolf who left his tribe – the Fianna – after he accidentally killed one of his own. He returns after he learns that something has happened to his son and that a corporation called Pentex, was threatening his tribe’s home.

The story has been reported to be largely linear, with only minor branching paths. It’s a surprise to see Cyanide taking this approach in this day and age when most RPG and non-RPG games have multiple story paths, and this has come as a disappointment to many fans.

However, since the storyline is linear, Cyanide might be able to release a game with a solid story since they dont have to worry about designing multiple paths that the player could potentially take over the course of the game.

Gameplay

In Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou have a total of five forms that they can assume, but only three of these forms will be available in the game. These are:

  • Homid – The human form that allows Cahal to blend in with the rest of the population, interact with them, and use a variety of different tools in order to tackle encounters stealthily.
  • Lupus – The wolf form whose main advantage is its speed, making it great for scouting, traversing the environment, but also for stealth and for squeezing in through tight spaces.
  • Crinos – The classic werewolf form that has Cahal transform into a massive, rage-fueled war machine that is half-wolf and half-man; made for combat.

Rage plays an important role when it comes to the Garou’s combat. Rage is what makes them so powerful and deadly in combat, but it is also something that threatens to consume them and drive them to insanity if they do not manage it properly.

Cahal’s rage accumulates whenever he is exposed to violence and corruption, and the player will need to utilize this rage strategically while making sure that it doesn’t overflow and cause Cahal to fly into an uncontrollable frenzy.

A frenzied werewolf becomes nearly unstoppable, but their minds are clowded by rage, not allowing them to differentiate between friend and foe. If Cahal’s rage is left unchecked, then he could end up killing allies and innocents, affecting the way the story plays out.

In addition to that, a werewolf who lets their rage control them risks being corrupted by the Wyrm, the very influence they fight against, which results in the werewolf losing their mind and an immediate game over.

The game is now only a few months away from release but there seems to be some mixed reception among the fans. While some are excited to finally see Werewolf: The Apocalypse get a video game adaptation, others find the gameplay to be generic.

Will you be picking up a copy of Werewolf: The Apocalypse when it hits the shelves on February 21st? Let us know!
