Re Zero Season 2: Release Date and Much More

Based on the Japanese Light Novel series written by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichirou Otsuka,  Re Zero Season 2 was scheduled to be premiered in April 2020. Due to production complications caused in 2019, it had to be postponed.

It was declared on 23rd March 2019,  that Re Zero Season 2 is in the works and that the cast and the other staff have resumed their roles.

Before the premiere of Re Zero Season 2,  an edited version of Season 1 premiered on 1st Jan 2020. This version not only recapped the first season but also included new additional footage.  There are talks of the release of the second season in April 2020. However, it is to be postponed to July of this year,  because of the current pandemic situation we are all in.

Re Zero: Starting Life in Another World

The 25- episode series aired from April 4,  2016, to September 19, 2016, with an extended 50-minute first episode.

Storyline

The story revolves around the character Subaru Natsuki,  who does nothing but plays video games. He also gets transferred to another world where he is a normal person without powers. However, he finds out that he has acquired the ability to ‘return from the dead’,  and can reverse time by dying,  which definitely came handy because Subara and everyone he cares about, die quite frequently.

Now, this kicks off an adventure. Subaru makes his duty to protect Emilia,  a half candidate in the royal election who seeks to challenge discrimination against half breeds. Also,  he quickly starts feeling for her,  though those feelings are at the least initially unrequited. Meanwhile,  the demon maid Rem has her own unrequited love for Subaru.

With the first season’s finale, it does make things a lot harder for Subaru than any other typical isekai protagonists. Subaru had to face his own faults along with magical beasts and witch cults. So you know,  victories are definitely hard-earned.

This covers everything up through the middle of Volume 9 of writer Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrator Shinichirou Otsuka’s light novel.

Re Zero Season 2

What do we know about Season 2?

Let’s start off with the trailer that shows Subaru wandering through a field of corpses. Thus promising that the series won’t let up on any of its darker elements.  Quite obviously, the season premiere would pick up exactly where the last season finale ended,  as a conversation Subaru and Emilia continues. Thus taking a dramatic left turn.

Why it took so long?

Kadokawa producer Sho Tanaka,  WHITE FOX producer Tsunaki Yoshikawa,  and Kadokawa MF Bunko magazine editor Masahito Ikemoto revealed in an interview that why it took two years for a new release for the series,  and even longer for the actual second season of the series. The staff was tired of exhaustion after the first run of the series came to an end.
