Best Hulu Movies in 2023

Published

on

Hulu had been unable to compete with Netflix’s dominance for the longest time. Thanks to a steady supply of great shows and movies, Hulu is now on the rise, and it directly competes with Netflix in the streaming market, even in terms of pricing.

Hulu’s catalog is just as remarkable as Netflix’s and includes everything from critically acclaimed comedies and dramas to reality series that you love to hate. Hulu even challenged Netflix for Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards with their original film Minding The Gap.

Hulu’s library includes not only the service’s original productions but also some of the best films of recent years, such as Palm Springs, as well as some older, legendary titles that Netflix lacks, such as The American and The Empire Strikes Back.

They also often release new films that are well-received by both viewers and critics, such as Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, The U.S. vs. Billie Holiday, and Crush.

So take a break from your bitcoin casino jackpot fun and check out the top films that you can stream on Hulu, ranging from horror to science fiction to comedies to dramas:

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Year: 2011

Director: Rupert Wyatt

This terrific movie from over a decade ago marked the beginning of a series that would go on to become one of the best modern action trilogies. Caesar (Andy Serkis) is a genetically produced chimpanzee raised by James Franco’s character, and he eventually leads the other monkeys in an uprising against their human oppressors. Rise of The Planet Apes is a film not to be missed.

2. Triangle of Sadness

Year: 2022

Director: Ruben Östlund

The latest film by Ruben Östlund was nominated for Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards and won the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The film also went on to scoop Best Picture at the European Film Awards.

Some people may not appreciate this film because it is a satirical critique of the super-rich living on a luxury cruise liner. It’s one of the most divisive Best Picture nominees, but many people adore it.

3. Prey

Year: 2022

Director: Dan Trachtenberg

Director Dan Trachtenberg breaks down the premise of hunter against hunted in the latest installment of the Predator saga, Prey, which pits the classic villain against Naru (the exceptional Amber Midthunder), a Comanche woman in the year 1719.

This incredibly violent and intense action film also features peaceful and contemplative moments thanks to Trachtenberg’s masterful tension-building. Trachtenberg and his amazing ensemble have revitalized the franchise by returning to its roots, elevating the series to new heights of excitement and genius.

4. Bruiser

Year: 2023

Director: Miles Warren

Bruiser is a family movie about a 14-year-old (Jalyn Hall) stuck between his father (Shamier Anderson) and a mystery vagabond (Trevante Rhodes), directed by first-time feature director Miles Warren with the assurance of a professional filmmaker. It is a narrative about becoming a parent, growing up, and standing up for what you believe in. Bruiser is also a pinnacle for Disney’s Black-centered storytelling subsidiary, Onyx Collective.

5. Nomadland

Year: 2020

Director: Chloe Zhao

Hulu has an exclusive on “The Favourite,” a stirring drama set in 2020 that won three Oscars (including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Actress) and is available exclusively through its partnership with Fox Searchlight (both of which are owned by Disney).

Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand as “Fern,” is about a woman forced to go on the road after losing her spouse and job. This is a fantastic film because it expertly combines documentary filmmaking techniques (such as having non-actors tell their own tales) with a strong focus on character development.

6. The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Year: 2022

Director: Bernard Derriman and Loren Bouchard

No one cares that The Bob’s Burgers Movie is one very long episode of Bob’s Burgers. Spending extra time with the Belchers isn’t monotonous because Bob’s Burgers is still entertaining after 12 (and counting) seasons.

The plot involves the family attempting to save the restaurant from a new source of financial catastrophe, in this case, a sinkhole that opens up in front of the building. Still, the film mostly showcases the musical scene writing skills of the film’s creators.

7. Bridesmaids

Year: 2011

Director: Paul Feig

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (Barb and Star) wrote the script for the hilarious comedy Bridesmaids. The film explores the complexities of female friendships through comic storytelling.

Paul Feig (Ghostbusters) directed Bridesmaids, which starred Wiig and a historically strong female comic cast that included Rose Byrne (Physical) and Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth). Not only has Bridesmaids been mentioned and referenced in pop culture for over a decade, but it has also been credited with catapulting most of its cast to international prominence.

8. Boston Strangler

Year: 2023

Director: Matt Ruskin

Produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) and written and directed by Matt Ruskin (Crown Heights), this period drama will leave you breathless. Based on actual events, Boston Strangler tells the tale of the Boston serial killer and the reporters who worked to bring him to justice.

In the film, Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game) plays Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter who broke the story in the 1960s despite facing discrimination, police corruption, and the dread of becoming a victim herself.

It’s hard not to get caught up in this gripping story just like the reporters of the era did, thanks to the engrossing setting and superb performances, notably from Carrie Coon (The Post) and David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad).

In Conclusion

Hulu made television history in 2017 when the smash hit The Handmaid’s Tale earned the network its first Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. Hulu’s original series have consistently reached and even surpassed the high standards set by the network’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, which is still one of the greatest shows on the service.
