What is a Gaylord container?

“Gaylord” is a term that comes from “gaillard” which is an old French word that means high-spirited or joyful. The word later turned into a Norman French origin family name. Since this transformation, many prominent people have had the surname Gaylord, which has included artisans, journalists, and politicians. Sometimes the term “gaylord” in North American is used to refer to corrugated triple-wall pallet boxes. That is because the first bulk bins were produced by the St. Louis-based Gaylord Container Company. In 1955, the San Francisco-based company Crown Zellerbach purchased the company. It later became a division called Gaylord Container Corporation and operated as a subsidiary from 1986 through 2002. Gaylord Container was based in a suburb of Chicago called Deerfield, Illinois. It was on the American Stock Exchange and its initial public offering was made in July 1988. In 2002, the company was acquired by Temple-Inland, one of its competitors, and then in 2012 International Paper acquired it. Despite its turbulent and long history, the central product of Gaylord Container Company has become an important mainstay in almost every industry.

Gaillard Characteristics

It might sound strange to use the word “Gaylord” to refer to a box. 4 wall Gaylord boxes are one-time-use bulk boxes that are mainly used for transporting a broad selection of different materials. These boxes are made out of corrugated cardboard and have lightweight, sturdy, and rigid advantages. This makes this type of container very easy to load, transport, and store. Three paper layers are used to make the corrugated cardboard. One of the layers of paper gets crimped and glued to the other layers which create a corrugated or ribbed pattern. It is tear-resistant, meaning you won’t need to worry that the box will split along the side or burst at the seams. Several important benefits are offered by Gaylord boxes to consumers, retailers, and manufacturers.  For one thing, they are heavy, strong boxes that are able to handle practically anything that is put inside of them.  However, Gaylord boxes have not been designed to be repeatedly used and reused. Instead, they are designed to be used one time. Fortunately, they are totally recyclable. The containers are a lot less expensive compared to most other shipping containers. However, they are only used one time. Many different names are used to refer to them. Gaylord boxes mainly are used for moving, storage, and shipping, although they are used for display purposes as well. The next time you visit a grocery store, you are very likely to see bagged products or fresh produce stored in Gaylord boxes.  They may be called tote bins, bulk bins, pallet boxes, or bulk boxes, but they all refer to Gaylord boxes, despite all of the different names.

Common Uses

Some of the most common uses for Gaylords include using them for storing waste, liquids, powders, and pallets. Bulk raw materials that need further packaging or processing are good candidates for being stored and shipped inside of a pallet box.  When the multi-functional receptacles have the right accessories, they are a very valuable shipping and storage resource. For reinforcement, corrugated may be added. To protect the contents, inner poly liners may be used, and for liquids sealed inner bags that ave valves may be used.  Large containers may be used for collecting and shipping waste and recycling materials. However, there are highly regulated applications for dangerous goods and hazardous waste materials. Numerous products are stored and shipped in corrugated boxes. In order to prevent product spillage and/or to help keep the contents protected from the outside elements plastic liners often need to be added to these boxes. The custom box liners from Edco Source are ideal for both non-food and food items These poly box liners provide enough durability for packaging both electronic components and medical devices. They are USDA and FDA-certified for food contact, which makes them ideal for packaging such foods as vegetables and fruits.

Gaylord Liners

An economical and popular way to provide protection is to use Gusseted Gaylord Box Liners, which are used as well as pallet covers. We offer many different sizes for you to choose from to meet your needs.  They can also be custom printed with your company’s information or logo displayed on them. Our Box Liners are very durable and ideal for keeping your cargo or product secure, clean, and safe.
