Created by Dick Wolf, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is an American crime drama television series. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit follows the style of the original Law & Order in that some episodes are loosely based on real crimes that have received media attention. Dick Wolf is also the executive producer of the show along with Ted Kotcheff, Peter Jankowski, Michael Smith, Julie Martin, Jonathan Starch, Arthur W. Forney and Mariska Hargitay. Also, the showrunners of the show include Robert Palm, David J. Burke, Neal Baer, Warren Leight, Rick Eid, Michael S. Chernuchin and David Graziano.

The show premiered on September 20, 1999. After the premiere of its 21st season in September 2019, the series became TV’s longest-running primetime U.S. live-action series in the history of television and the only live-action primetime series that debuted in the 1990s and is still producing new episodes. In February 2020, the series was renewed through its 24th season. The 23rd season premiered on September 23, 2021, during which the show aired its milestone 500th episode.

In the criminal justice system, sexually-based offences are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. The show is based on their stories.

The main cast includes Christopher Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer, Dann Florek, Michelle Hurd, Stephanie March, Ice-T, BD Wong, Diane Neal, Tamara Tunie, Adam Beach, Michaela McManus, Danny Pino, Kelli Giddish, Raúl Esparza, Peter Scanavino, Philip Winchester, Jamie Gray Hyder, Demore Barnes and Octavio Pisano.

The makers have renewed the show for a twenty-fourth season and set it to be aired on Thursday, September 22 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

The number of episodes for the upcoming season is not confirmed yet as it has been different in the first 23 seasons. It is distributed by NBCUniversal Syndication Studios.
