Puss in Boots was a spin-off and a prequel to the Shrek film franchise. The film was produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film received fairly positive reviews from critics and garnered $555 million at the worldwide box office. It was also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 84th Academy Awards in 2012. Chris Miller, director of Shrek the Third, directed Puss in Boots as well. Brian Lynch and Tom Wheeler had written the screenplay for the film. A sequel to the film was announced in 2012. It was titled Puss in Boots: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves and was scheduled to release in 2018. However, it was later pulled off of DreamWorks’s release schedule in 2015.

Puss in Boots 2: What we know so far
A sequel to Puss in Boots was announced in 2012, with executive producer Guillermo del Toro confirming work being done on draft scripts for a sequel. Antonio Banderas, who voices the titular character Puss in Boots, also said in 2014 that work had begun on the sequel. The sequel was titled Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves. The film was scheduled to release in December, 2018. However, with corporate restructuring happening at DreamWorks Animation, the film was pulled off from their release schedule in 2015.

In November 2018, it was reported that Chris Meledandri will be an executive producer on both Shrek 5 and Puss in Boots 2. In February 2019, Bob Persichetti was signed on as director of the sequel. He had previously served as head of story on the first film. Latifa Ouaou, who was the producer of Puss in Boots, will be overseeing the development of the sequel. There is also a crossover with Shrek expected in the sequel. The original cast is expected to be returning for the sequel. This includes Antonio Banderas as the voice of Puss in Boots, Salma Hayek as the voice of Kitty Softpaws, and Constance Marie as Puss’s adoptive human mother, Imelda.

As of now, there has been no official release date announced for the sequel.
