Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings: Plot and Cast
Shang-Chi is a fictional superhero who first appeared in the Marvel Comics and was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin in the Bronze Age of Comic Books. He is often referred to as ‘The Master of Kung-Fu’ because of his expertise in Chinese martial arts, which includes the use of gùn, nunchaku and jian.
Shang-Chi is the sun of Chinese mastermind Fu Manchu and an American mother who was genetically selected by his father for the purpose of mating. Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi in the movie.
Tony Leung plays Mandarin, who is the leader of the Ten Rings terrorist organization. While originally Fu Manchu should’ve been the villain of the movie, the character was perceived to comply with racist stereotypes, a view that Marvel Cinematic Universe did not agree with.
The director Destin Daniel Cretton wanted to make Mandarin seem more humane than just having a black and white superhero-villain plot. He also wanted to break the stereotype of what Chinese heroes and villains look like.
