What If…? Season 2: Release Date, Plot, and more!

Created by A.C. Bradley, What If…? Is an American animated anthology series. The show is based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. It is the fourth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios and the studio’s first animated series.

The first season of What If…? premiered on August 11, 2021, and ran for nine episodes until October 6. It is part of Phase Four of the MCU. A second nine-episode season is expected to premiere soon.

What If…? Plot and Cast

While What If…? Season 1 is an anthology of stories, the connective thread is its notorious cliffhangers that built up to a big battle and the introduction of the Guardians of the Multiverse in the finale.

Bradley confirmed to EW that Season 2 will take a different approach to its stories, saying it will be different from the “end of the world” arcs we saw in Season 1. She said that Season 2 will “focus a lot more on the character stories and these heroes and showing a different side of them that people don’t expect and hopefully they can relate to.”

A more character-driven second season sounds like an interesting direction for What If…? to take. Especially as more characters enter the MCU over the next year, What If…? could be an opportunity for fans and viewers to spend more time with new characters. And, given the fanfare around the Guardians of the Multiverse, we should expect to see that team-up again.

Marvel Studios has not confirmed who will return for Season 2. However, it’s safe to say that Jeffrey Wright will likely resume his role as The Watcher. Whether Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, and many others will return to play their iconic MCU roles wholly depends on if What If…? features new stories with their characters.

Season 2 will also feature new MCU characters from their latest movies, like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals.

What If…? Season 2 Release Date

We don’t have a release date for What If…? Season 2 yet. A second season of What If…? was confirmed as the first was coming out, and it has recently been confirmed to premiere on Disney Plus in 2023.

It was also announced that the next season will consist of nine episodes like the previous season. The other information will be revealed soon.
