What You Should Know About Black Narcissus

Black Narcissus is an upcoming American drama miniseries that is based on the 1939 book with the same name by Rumer Godden. Amanda Coe wrote the screenplay for all the episodes while Charlotte Bruus Christensen directed the miniseries. Amanda Coe, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich and Lucy Richer serve as the executive producers while BBC, DNA TV, and FXP act as the distributors for the miniseries.

Black Narcissus: Plot and Cast

The movie is set in pre-independence India when a group of Anglican nuns was invited by a Rajput ruler to set up a hospital and school in his princely state. These facilities are required to be built high in the Himalayas on the top of a cliff where his father’s harem was based.

Five sisters are appointed for the mission: Sister Clodagh who is also the Sister Superior; Sister Phillippa appointed for the garden, Sister Briony for the infirmary, Sister Ruth for general classes, and Sister Blanche for lace-making classes. Sister Clodagh is very ambitious, Sister Ruth emotionally vulnerable and unstable.

During their stay at the convent in India, the sisters frequently had troubles with the local Indian crowd, including the Angu Ayah, who is the caretaker of the building. Each nun suffers from her own distress because of the surroundings, especially Sister Ruth who becomes jealous of Sister Clodagh and starts becoming obsessed with Mr. Dean.

Alessandro Nivola plays Mr. Dean in the miniseries, while Gemma Atherton plays Sister Clodagh. Aisling Franciosi plays Sister Ruth while Diana Rigg plays Mother Dorothea. Rosie Cavaliero plays Sister Briony while Patsy Ferran plays Sister Blanche and Gina McKee plays Sister Adela.
