Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Cast

Natalie Dormer plays Magda. Showtime describes her as “a supernatural demon who can take the appearance of anyone she chooses and manifests in a number of guises throughout the story. Charismatic, clever, and chameleonic, Magda is a dangerous enemy and an invaluable ally.”  Some of her personas include:

Alexandra Malone, City Councilman Townsend’s political aide with an alleged secret past as a German Jew. Elsa Branson, a German housewife who seduces Peter Craft. Her son Frank is also one of Magda’s personas. Rio, the leader of the pachuco gang in Los Angeles who has a polyamorous relationship with Fly Rico and Mateo.

The rest of the cast includes Daniel Zovatto as Santiago Vega, Kerry Bishe as Sister Molly Finnister, Adrianna Barraza as Maria Vega, and Jessica Garza as Josefina Vega. Michael Gladis, Johnathon Nieves, Rory Kinnear, and Nathan Lane also play major roles.

What Is Penny Dreadful: City of Angels About?

This show is described as a ‘spiritual descendant’ of the original. It is set 50 years after the original during the Golden Age Of Hollywood. The setting is in 1930 Los Angeles. The characters are connected in a conflict between Santa Muerte and her demoness spiritual sister, Magda. Santa Muerte is the Mexican folklore deity and the caretaker of the dead and guide to the beyond. Detectives Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener are assigned with a gruesome murder case. They become involved in racial tensions, the threat of war, and Nazi conspiracies!

The city of Angels will show a balance between the supernatural and political issues. Here’s what John Logan said:

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the Penny Dreadful London storylines.” He continued, “There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

I am a passionate writer just trying to figure out life and myself. Writing has always been a way of expressing myself, hence most of my work is pretty raw and unprocessed. I try my best to be unapologetic about what I write. This internship in ByProduct Ventures has allowed me to push myself and see what all I am capable of. I have always pictured the future me as someone very creative and this opportunity takes me one step towards that. Apart from writing, I also love expressing myself by painting or drawing. All I want from life is to keep learning, falling and rising and to live every moment like it is my last! (aditigautam1705@gmail.com)
