Samsung Galaxy Fold launched: A phone with 6 Cameras, 2 Displays & 2 Batteries!

Samsung teased its foldable smartphone back in November last year. Now, the South Korean manufacturer has finally revealed the same with the monicker Samsung Galaxy Fold. That being said, the company also unveiled its Samsung Galaxy S10-lineup during the Galaxy Unpacked event.

Notably, the new Samsung Galaxy Fold is a phone-tablet hybrid that kicks off a new smartphone category. When folded it allows one-handed use, and when unfurled, it will enable to be used as a regular tablet. The company said both LTE and 5G versions of the handset will be available.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: Appearance and Design

Samsung Galaxy Fold uses a 7.3-inch Infinity Display Flex Display that allows the phone to have a tablet-sized display that can fold into the size of a smartphone. The main (4:2:3) display has a QXGA+ resolution of 1536 x 2152 pixels while the secondary (12:9) screen is of 4.6 inches with 840 x 1960 pixel resolution. The phone works on a hinge system that has “multiple interlocking gears”. The gears are hidden at the rear of the device allowing that transformation to take place.

The handset doesn’t completely fold in half which is why there is a small gap in the centre when closed. When folded, the massive bezels can be seen around the secondary display. It seems to use a plastic cover to protect it from scratches. The foldable smartphone differs from previous foldable designs and will likely have a wider release compared to the others.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be available in four colour options. The device can run three apps all at once and uses an app continuity system to adjust these apps in transformation. The standard apps like What’s App, Microsoft Office and YouTube have been optimised to run smoothly on these new displays. Samsung has been working with Google to ensure that Android 9 Pie and the new displays work hand-in-hand. The company gave a demonstration with Google Maps at the event. Though the app was launched on the smaller screen, the maps opened up on the same spot on a larger display when unfolded.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: Specifications, Features

As for its internal specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Fold features 12GB RAM and 512GB if Universal Flash Storage 3.0 (eUFS). It is powered the top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset built on the 7nm process. The device comes into two batteries combining for a 4,300 mAh capacity that are separated by the fold.

In the optics department, the device comes with six cameras including a triple rear camera setup that works on both the phone and tablet mode. The setup includes a 16MP ultra-wide camera, 12MP wide-angle and telephoto lens, and a 10MP cover camera for selfies.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: Price, Availability

Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy Fold on April 26 with a starting price of $1,980. The company is also planning to launch the device in Europe on May 3, starting at 2,000 euros. However, this is not the only foldable smartphone we will see this year. Xiaomi recently teased its foldable smartphone while Huawei confirmed that its foldable smartphone is in development. Lenovo also teased its prototype while LG is developing OLED displays and TVs that can be rolled up into a box.
