Crazy Rich Asians was the most successful romantic comedy film of the 2010s decade. The film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing $238 million worldwide on a budget of $30 million. It also received a lot of nominations for numerous awards such as the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, to name a few. Crazy Rich Asians was directed by Jon M. Chu, and was based on the 2013 novel of the same name by author Kevin Kwan.
After the success of the first film, Warner Bros. announced that a sequel for the film was in development. The film will be based on the sequel to the first novel, titled China Rich Girlfriend. A third sequel, based on the book Rich People Problems, Kevin Kwan’s third book in the Crazy Rich trilogy, is also in development along with China Rich Girlfriend. Both films will be filmed back-to-back in order to reduce the time period between their respective releases.

Most of the main cast of the first film will be expected to reprise their roles for the sequel. Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Rachel’s boyfriend Nick Young, Gemma Chan as Astrid Leong-Teo, Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin, Lisa Lu as Nick’s grandmother Shang Su Yi, Ken Jeong as Goh Wye Mun, Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Sung-Young; all are expected to be back for China Rich Girlfriend. Harry Shum Jr., who makes a brief appearance at the end of the first film, is also expected to be in the sequel, playing the role of Astrid’s ex-fiance Charlie Wu.

As for new cast members, no official announcement has been made yet. There are a lot of new characters that are expected to be introduced in the sequel, but the actors/actresses playing those characters have not been cast yet.
Release Date of Crazy Rich Asians 2
There have been delays in the script, with writer Adele Lim leaving the project in 2019 due to pay disparity disputes. As of now, director Jon M. Chu and writer Peter Chiarelli have been working on the sequel. There has been no official release date announced. We can expect Crazy Rich Asians (or China Rich Girlfriend) to release sometime in late 2021.
