Soul: Plot and Cast
Joe Gardner is a middle school music teacher and has always dreamt of performing jazz music professionally. He finally gets a chance when he gets invited to play at the Half Note Club as the opening act of the night. All he wishes to do is impress other jazz musicians and make his mark in the genre, and he manages to be very successful.
However, he gets into an unfortunate accident and his soul gets separated from his body. It starts to proceed to The Great Beyond, but somehow manages to escape to The Great Before. Here, souls are trained before they are sent off to Earth. They develop personalities and quirks in this place and here, Joe’s soul meets 22.
22 is another soul in The Great Before, that hardly has a personality and has a dim view of life. Pretending to be another soul in training, Joe tries to get back to his body before he dies. He also needs to fight off his enemy Paul, who has his eye set on Joe’s dream and wants to steal it.
Jamie Foxx plays Joe Gardner while Tina Fey plays 22. Questlove plays Curly, a drummer in Joe’s band. Phylicia Rashad plays Joe’s mother while Daveed Diggs plays Paul. Angela Bassett plays Dorothea Williams, a jazz musician, while Richard Ayoade plays Jerry, a counsellor in The Great Before.
