Developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an upcoming fantasy television series. Based on stories by J.R.R. Tolkien, it is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The series was announced in 2017 and its development started in 2018. It has been revealed that the show is not a direct continuation of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. Production was temporarily halted because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the first season of the series is scheduled to premiere on September 2, 2022. It has been already renewed for a second season.
So, when is the second season releasing? What is the plot? Who would come back to play the lead roles? Continue reading to know further details.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Plot and Cast

It is hard to anticipate what would happen in the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Since the first season has not premiered yet, we can predict something based on the events of Season 1.
The show is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and it is based on author J.R.R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth. It starts during a time of relative peace and covers all the major events of Middle-earth’s Second Age that include the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Numenor and the last alliance between Elves and Men.
The events take thousands of years in Tolkien’s original stories, but are condensed for the series. Further details shall be revealed once the show premieres on Amazon Prime Video.
Although it cannot be confirmed who might return in Season 2, we can expect to see the lead cast members of Season 1. This includes Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Naznin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Charles Edwards and Lenny Henry.
We will also get to see Markella Kavenagh, Simon Merrells, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Charlie Vickers, Benjamin Walker and Daniel Weyman in others important roles.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Release Date

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on September 2, 2022. Reports say that filming for the second season will start by mid-2022. Considering that, the second season should premiere by the end of 2023.
The new season might consist of eight episodes like Season 1. The rest of the details should be revealed by the end of 2022 and details on the development of Season 2 should be out in the next few months.
