5 Top Documentaries On Netflix To Stream In Canada

Published

on

Netflix Canada boasts an enormous content library, with more than 5,000 titles, including TV shows and films. The diversity of its content is second to none, but sometimes, this many options can make it hard for you to decide what to watch.

When you are exploring thousands of options on your Netflix account, the documentary genre can’t be overlooked. This traditional niche filmmaking art can offer equal excitement as any of the Hollywood blockbusters, with unheard, real-life stories and events from history.

However, some of the documentaries are only available on Netflix US, and you will need a premium VPN to watch American Netflix content in Canada.

Several Netflix Originals are now occupying the streamer’s documentaries catalog. Although Netflix’s catalog of documentaries isn’t as good as it used to be, it has still come up with trailblazing and cardinal docs in recent years, be it festival finds, thrilling true-crime series, or semi-obscure essentials.

Do you know that your favorite Canadian police procedural crime drama is coming back with its latest season? Check out all the details about Coroner Season 5!

Coming back to documentaries, if you are searching for new, engrossing tales, there are plenty of options available. As a matter of fact, Netflix’s documentary selection is absolutely impressive and the choices are almost overwhelming.

In this post, we will explore some of the best docu-series that will make you look at the world from a whole new perspective. Here are 5 top documentaries on Netflix to stream in Canada.

1. David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020)

David Attenborough is undoubtedly one of the most well-known personalities in the conversation field. The English ecological historian and novelist is basically a household name because of his considerable work on the history of nature, presented in his recognizable narrating manner.

Attenborough is well-respected among the public and the research community, and almost 20 species were named after him. In this documentary, he addresses his career, focusing on how much the earth has changed in the last 90 years or so. He considers the documentary a “witness statement,” merged with content from his earlier work.

He also outlines what, in his opinion, may happen if humans continue to exploit nature in the same way they do today. It implies the extinction of the whole ecosystem and drastically altered climate conditions, which may result in global extinction. Attenborough implies that it can be avoided and outlines efforts to undo the harm we humans have caused to the earth. It is an inspirational documentary that presents both criticism and optimism. Regardless of your interest in nature, this is informative for everyone.

2. The Tinder Swindler (2022)

On Tinder, we all have seen men who appear to be a bit too promising to be true. Impressions of life spent traveling, wearing fancy watches and clothes, and living impeccably. Because it is about the possibility of finding an ideal mate, while some may swipe left, others happily swipe right to test their luck. This is how Simon Leviev’s fraud started.

By seducing and showering them with presents, lavish trips, and vows of love, the charismatic Simon wins the heart of women. Soon after, he is the one getting money when he is apparently hurt from assault by his “enemies.”

The Tinder Swindler demonstrates how easy it is for a man to manipulate and scam women into sending them tens of thousands of dollars under pretense. Using his prey as fuel for his luxurious life, Simon is a vicious predator, who still exists today. The Tinder Swindler serves as a continual reminder that scammers will stop at nothing to succeed in their deception and that faith cannot be taken for granted in the realm of dating apps.

3. Our Father (2022)

Our Father is a documentary demonstrating that sometimes reality is more bizarre than fiction. It is frightening, unsettling, and – at the same time – just plain bizarre. The movie portrays Donald Cline, a senior fertility specialist in Indianapolis, who was using his sperm to conceive many of his patients without their knowledge.

As we witness a woman’s at-home DNA analysis turn into deeper and more evil than anybody could have anticipated, several moments will leave you in awe. This is one of those narratives that simply keeps getting intense until you can no longer believe what is happening.

4. Abducted in Plain Sight (2017)

Abducted in Plain Sight is the documentary that fascinates everyone to watch as lots of viewers struggle to believe the narrative of how the ostensibly fantastic Broberg family was single-handedly wrecked in the mid-1970s by a crazy neighbor named Bob “B” Berchtold, who was fixated on their 12 years old daughter, Jan.

This explanation, however, does not give the documentary credit since what happened is one of the most unbelievable crimes committed by a madman who was so cunning that he managed to abduct Jan two times. Abducted in Plain Sight is also another horrific portrayal of how one person’s deceit can ruin many lives as well as how adults and the legal systems repeatedly fail juvenile victims of sexual assault.

5. Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story (2022)

Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story, an intriguing voyage into an occasionally neglected sport, follows Leo Baker as he rises to the pinnacle of pro skateboarding. Directors Giovanni Reda and Nicola Marsh portray the fierce dynamic of skate society, which developed from a local skate rink to the international arena and eventually turned into a privileged sports community.

In the documentary,  Leo Baker explains how his talents carried him to his peak, laying a foundation that others could follow and establishing a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ society.

Conclusion

Real-life and non-fiction content is always fascinating and deeply draws viewers’ attention. If you are keen on watching documentaries in Canada and weighing your options, start with our recommendation list, and you’ll not be disappointed!
